Continuing Education at GAF — Why Applicator Experience Makes or Breaks a Roof Coating
Continuing education is important no matter what industry you’re in. If you aren’t continuously trying to better yourself and those you work with, you are failing as a business owner. Money isn’t everything.
The team at Pepper Coatings LLC attends several silicone and acrylic roof coating training courses annually. Our most recent continuing education course was held at GAF’s manufacturing facility in Dallas, located at 2816 Singleton Blvd., at the intersection of N. Hampton Rd. and Singleton Blvd.
We spent the morning in a classroom setting discussing product details and industry standards for roof coating systems, the common commercial roofing environments we encounter, and how to best recommend our roof coating products for the different commercial roof substrates we run into.
Knowing the right product to recommend for a commercial roof restoration project is everything. We see roof coating systems fail regularly, and it is almost always due to applicator error — we documented exactly what that looks like on a 90,000 sq ft roof in Saginaw, where a missing 3-course termination at the drip edge eventually took the whole coating off. When a commercial facility manager or owner picks a roof coatings contractor to restore their roof, they need to see experience and a proven track record.
After a quick lunch we spent a couple of hours in the shop working on application techniques.
These training courses are always a great opportunity to meet new people and share ideas. Pepper Coatings has been a roof coating installer and applicator since 2013. We still try to attend every course we can. We try to learn something new every day!
